since darwin’s seminal work “the origin of species” we can conceive of generative processes that cause divergence and genetic difference in time. in particular, genetic algorithms offer a potential bridge between the science of formation - developmental biology, and design. Developmental biology focuses on large quantities of topological and geometrical procedures occuring over a period of time. Within a genetic construct these principles can allow for the breeding of novel solutions that fulfil multiple design criteras. computer coded genetic algorithms use selection criterias that are negotiated through quantifiable mathematical functions, this leaves us as designers questioning - can we encode qualitive selection criterias within such algorithms for our own design agendas? embryogenetic organisations will focus on organisational strategies for developing form as field organisation whilst developing qualitative design evaluative criteria....participants will build their own scripting methods for handling particular geometries and algorithmic behaviours. the course will also touch on many other fields of algorithmic design, however the program is focused on learning by doing..and building up a useful resource which may be utilised in studio also.
