Agent based figuration
(This is being modified): The purpose of the project is to explore the potentials of agent based systems to develop ornamentation which approaches the range of empathetic affect created by figurative/narrative ornament in gothic and second empire architecture. The project will utilize the behaviors of abstract component agents to generate a range of emotive responses while negating narrative and literal figuration. The project will focus on the creation of chamber which interacts with the behaviors of the occupant. Unlike other responsive kinetic installations which translate occupant behavior in a mapping function to a formal or graphic expression, the components or mesh comprising the walls of the chamber will have imbedded behaviors both in internal response to other agents and to the occupant. The chamber will not only be conditioned by the occupant’s behavior, but also condition the occupant’s behavior. The project will aim to push beyond a realist tendency towards pastiche by leveraging the emergent capabilities of an agent based system. By creating a system which engages the occupant proactively and engages itself through a range of emotive behaviors the project looks to create architecture of synthetic dialogue approaching the complexity of the supposedly irreducible human condition. It also will explore the occupant reaction to a seemingly conscious and feeling architecture.
