SITUATED FABRICATIONS UNIVERSITY OF INNSBRUCK | 2016
Innsbruck, Austria
Technology Seminar: Robotic Fabrication

situatedFabrications explores design through generative fabrication methods that utilise situated robotic protocols to engage in real-time sensing and fabrication behaviours. As a behaviour-based approach to 3D Printing in concrete, robot operations negotiate pre-determined design intention, real-time feedback and encoded algorithmic design behaviours in order to produce novel Additively Manufactured works. The seminar focused on the design and prototyping of a concrete architectural screen partial mockup. Digital and physical processes will aim to embody spatial, formal and material affects that arise from their integrated design and production process. Messy and engaging; these processes involve novel forms of participation and in-direct control, and aim to challenge the explicit nature of established robotic fabrication procedures.
workshop outline:
This 6 day workshop explores algorithmic design methodologies that engage complex and non-linear systems to generate emergent affects. The workshop developed both recursive and self-organising techniques that are capable of generating complex forms of order.

This research interrogates how architectural intention can operate at a local level and through the interaction of low level rules systemic geometries and aggregations emerge. The workshop introduces a set of algorithmic design techniques that students will expand on in the development of a coherent generative design methodology. These strategies include: recursion, conditional substitution and self-organisation.

The studio will investigate poly-scalar behavioral systems in the generation of architecture. This investigation will employ instruments of computation as a means of generating highly specific yet projective trial and errors towards new forms of design innovation. In this way we will approach what has been for architecture a traditionally 'unappealing' trajectory of research, that is a move away from generalism towards a more focused and specific set of investigations.

These investigations will focus on systems of local interaction operating at a level of complexity that give rise to emergent behavior. The semester will begin with the interrogation of behavioral systems operating within the biological and physical worlds, from which the underlying systems or rule sets will be extracted and subsequently instrumentalised in the design process.
These behavioral systems will be tested at multiple architectural scales through the design of a fashion and design exhibition complex. This brief calls for the reinvention of the large span shed typology employing strategies which simultaneously operate at the large scale of organization and micro scale of texture and surface articulation. These are never envisaged as separate operations but gradients which emerge from within a given system capable of generating differentiation while maintaining systemic consistency.

Drawing upon the material intelligence and non-linear behavior of complex fabrics the studio will question normative notions of hierarchical tectonics instead encouraging the development of networked or woven infrastructural tectonics. We are interested in fabrics beyond the topological fixity of the loom - the studio will explore the non-linear relationships between individual agents that can give rise to emergent topologies and surface affects.
The studio will engage agent based techniques to model the local interaction within complex systems. This methodology questions traditional notions of authorship, recasting design decisions to the micro-level in generating a swarm intelligence – a design creature. We will develop processes where the designer interacts in real time with this form of distributed intelligence - shifting the act of design from invention to orchestration.

course outline:
This workshop will examine the role of agency within generative design processes. The course will engage algorithmic techniques in the development of a computational methodology grounded in swarm intelligence. While discussing the political and social role of agency, the workshop will focus on an abstract design methodology, recasting simple decision making ability into agents capable of self-organizing into an emergent intelligence. Scripting will form the basis for algorithmic models which enable localized interaction of agents to generate emergent topologies in the design of proto-architectural forms, structures and articulation. Unlike the typical application of swarm systems in design, this workshop will not engage simply in the mapping of these complex systems, but instead, we will mine the self-organizing potential of the systems to negotiate between a complex set of desires and parameters in the generation of architecture.

Computational design is shifting away from the reliance on heavy platforms such as Maya into lightweight scripting environments, enabling the massive iteration required for emergent processes. In anticipating this shift, the workshops will focus on the newer lightweight languages of Processing and RhinoScript.

workshop outline:
apo mechanes is an intensive 2.5 week computational design studio to be held in athens, greece.

a studio dedicated to furthering the techniques and concepts of algorithmic processes as means for design and fabrication, apo mechanes investigates the modes of algorithmic and machinic processes in architectural design. at present computational techniques are predominantly employed in the optimization, rationalization or surface decoration of more traditionally created wholes. this research will instead focus on the inherent potential of computation to generate space and of algorithmic procedures to engage self-organization in the design process. participants will create their own custom algorithms leading to the fabrication of working prototypes appropriate to their research trajectories.

apo mechanes is derived from "ἀπὸ μηχανῆς θεός" [aˈpo mɛːkʰaˈnɛːs tʰeˈos] literally "god from the machine", which is a plot device of ancient greek drama. in numerous tragedies, the poet would gradually steer the plot/myth to an inflection point at which the natural resolution of the conflict would be very difficult if not impossible. then, an unexpected event in the form of an intervention of a god would take place and allow for the play to continue. the term "from the machine" was established due to the fact that the god would enter the stage with the help of a "machine" - a wooden crane on which he would appear floating form above.

studio outline:
This studio investigated non-linear systems and self-organization at both a methodological and programmatic level. This exploration too the form of design research into algorithmic methodologies and was tested through the brief for a School of Architecture.

Since the 1960’s the world in which we live is increasingly being understood as an emergent outcome of complex systems. Research into complexity cuts across traditional boundaries as the self-organizing systems which underlie one phenomena can be found to operate at various scales within a diverse set of circumstances. Consequently this studio explored the nature and operation of complex systems as well as their application to design. This involved extracting the processes that operate within the physical world as well as developing new models of self-organization. The development of non-linear design methodologies involves a shift in the design process from invention to that of orchestrating systems in the generation of an emergent architecture.

Students explored non-linear algorithmic design methodologies in developing complex systems. The studio focuses on how these non-linear systems interact and operate within geometry in response to a set of architectural criteria. The research explored how specific architectural intent can be programmed at a micro level enabling local interactions to self-organize into coherent structures and forms.

course outline:
This seminar examined the role of agency within generative design processes. The course engaged algorithmic techniques in the development of a computational methodology grounded in swarm intelligence. The seminar focuses on an abstract design methodology, recasting simple decision making ability into agents capable of self-organizing into an emergent intelligence. Scripting forms the basis for algorithmic models which enable localized interaction of agents to generate emergent topologies in the design of proto-architectural forms, structures and articulation.

The repositioning of design intent and the complex order generated by the behavioral techniques of multi-agent systems has implications for the affects which are generated as well as the nature of hierarchy within architecture. The distributed non-linear operation of swarm systems intrinsically resists the discrete articulation of hierarchies within Modern architecture and contemporary parametric component assemblies. The bottom up nature of these systems refocuses tectonic concerns on the assemblage at the micro scale rather than the sequential subdivision of form.
